When Winter Toes Meet Summer Sand:

Top 4 Tips to Remember About this Season’s First Pedicure

You’ve survived another Rochester winter filled with dry skin and sunless days. No doubt you’ve been catching yourself daydreaming of the perfect swimsuit and the power of your sunscreen, counting the days until you can slip on your sandals and flip flops for the first time in months. If you agree that it’s finally time for your toes to once again see the light of day—listen up!

Here are four tips Maxim Spa and Salon wants you to remember when it comes to your first pedicure of the season:

  • Schedule your pedicure if you can. We are always happy to provide walk-in services to people. However, if you’re able to schedule your pedicure ahead of time make sure to allot yourself at least two hours. The service will not take that long, but it will give you enough time to let your toenails dry completely, which will help ensure the lasting quality of your pedicure for up to two weeks without chipping or cracking.

  • Do not shave your legs before you come in. Too many women do this thinking they are saving themselves the embarrassment of having a nail tech see their unshaved legs. But this is very important not to do. Although every pedicure basin is thoroughly sterilized between uses, scrapes and nicks caused by shaving can make people more susceptible for risk of infection. It can also result in just a very unpleasant experience, as exfoliation and creams can sting newly shaven legs that have stripped off a layer of skin in the process. Rather shave them 1-2 days prior or not at all. Seriously, we don’t care if we touch your stubble. We’ve seen it all. So don’t apologize. Just come as you are and shave after.

  • Pick a color that complements your skin tone. Trends are fun, but what’s most important is that you look and feel great when you’re salon service is done. Believe me, we’re guilty of wanting to try the newest thing. It’s exciting to see what’s in fashion and what’s new for nails and in nail art. But new isn’t always better or practical. Carefully placed crystals may look beautiful on a bride’s toes for her big day, but won’t last long if ocean soaked and wave battered for days on end. Still, with bright pinks and fuchsias and lavenders and purples predicted to be hot this year as seen in OPI’s New Orleans Collection for spring and summer 2016, work with your nail technician to pick the right tone or shade to complement your skin tone. We want you to look and feel your best literally from head to toes.

  • Be the boss of you. In theory, we all know it’s important to speak up for ourselves, but it’s the execution that sometimes get lost. Sometimes something happens to some people when they feel put on the spot. They freeze. In our case, sometimes people clam up and let the pedicure happen to them versus relaxing and enjoying the experience. This is a major don’t! Remember that we want you to have a good experience. We want you to come back. If you experience pain or get the giggles because it tickles – just tell us. We can adjust our approach. If you decide you don’t like the color… say so. That’s an easy thing to fix, especially after only polishing a couple toes. Be your own beauty advocate. We love to listen and want to help.
